Well, after the dry May we had, June has given us close to 4 inches of rain. It has also given us some amazing sunsets, rainbows and weird cloud formations. A little over a week into June we had a small storm with a lovely rainbow. I grabbed the camera and ran outside. I managed to capture almost a full bow over my neighbor’s house across the street but it was fading fast. I headed to the Pond and I got down in time to catch the last bit of the right side of it over the Pond as it faded away. The clouds were gorgeous over the Pond even though there wasn’t much color over the Lagoon where the sun was actually setting. I decided to stay and catch the last of what is called alpine glow. That is when the sky lights up again after the sun has actually set! Then all of a sudden, another rainbow appeared over the Pond. This time it was the bottom of the left side of the arch that appeared out of the bottom of the clouds. You could just faintly see the faded bit of that first bow above and to the left. As the sun set the clouds over the Pond continued to turn beautiful colors. And it all happened in the space of 15 minutes!!!
On June 23rd, the weathermen started predicting severe thunder storms, hail and possible tornados! Well, we didn’t get the hail or the tornados here in Woburn, but we did get torrential rains and high winds. Hoping for another rainbow, out I went again with the camera. Since it was still sprinkling out, I didn’t go far. I started shooting right from the steps of my porch towards the setting sun. As the rain slowed down, I walked up the street that veers off to the right at the end of Water Street. The sun was setting right at the end of the street. The clouds were bright gold and looked like bubbles! Actually they are called Mammatus clouds and they are associated with severe thunder storms and Cumulonimbus clouds. The ‘bubbles’ didn’t show up as much in the photos as they did in person! And as the sun was setting a big, bright Cumulonimbus or thundercloud moved across the sky behind me, turning pink as the sun set! All in all, a spectacular display!
